Industry
Overview
The energy efficiency of equipment,
buildings and
industrial processes has improved dramatically in the
past ten years: in many cases the best available equipment
is over 25% more efficient than the equipment available in
1990. Despite these increases in efficiency, electricity use
grew by 16% over the period from 1990 to 2000 mainly because
we have experienced both economic and population growth
that has resulted in a steady increase in the demand for
electricity. Almost
half of electricity
demand comes from
the industrial sector while the residential and
commercial
sectors account for about one-quarter each. However,
since
1990 we have been witnessing a steady decline in
electricity
intensity. This means that the growth in electricity
demand is slowly
diverging from economic growth. Based
on broadly accepted outlooks for
economic and population
growth and the trends we have been seeing in
electricity
intensity, it is reasonable to expect electricity demand
growth
over the coming ten years to be slightly lower, in the range
of
1.0 to 1.5 % annually.
Energy brings prosperity and
gives us a comfortable life.
But our use of energy also has
disadvantages – environmental
pollution, climate change – which have
already assumed
serious proportions. We must reduce the energy demand,
by using energy as efficiently as possible.
Investments in energy
efficiency and renewable energy
by themselves avoided emissions of
8,286 million tons
carbon (MtC) over the 23-year period. Energy
efficiency and
renewable energy can contribute even more in the future
toward meeting U.S. commitments to greenhouse gas reductions.
